Hey, these are movies that make me want to write. Not a list of my favorites.
- The Shawshank Redemption
- The Sixth Sense
- One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (Jack)
- Benjamin Button
- Forrest Gump
- Planet of the Apes (Heston’s version inspired me to write Paradox)
- The Godfather
- The Usual Suspects
- Ghost
- Titanic
- Scent of a Woman
- The Green Mile
- Field of Dreams (This is not about baseball. It’s about fathers and sons)
- It’s a Wonderful Life
- The Lion King (Hakuna Matata – Need I say more?)
- The Matrix (Second movie that inspired me to write Paradox)
- Se7en
- American Beauty
- Training Day
- Dirty Dancing (Nobody puts Baby in a corner)
Does the movie’s genre influence what you want write or is it just a general urge?

Hey, Charles. Yeah the genre does affect what I am in the mood to write. Sci-fi and thrillers push me to write the same genre. Everything else inspires me to inject more personality, love, and emotions in my work. Do movies inspire you? And does the genre influence you? Thanks for stopping by.

Movies and TV shows tend to inspire me, but they usually catch me by surprise. Anime is a big influence, which becomes more obvious in some of my later story ideas. I think TV shows have more of an impact with me than movies though. That one side character or subplot that gets me thinking as I zone out. Doesn’t always work out well. I keep trying to do stuff inspired by Evangelion, but it never works.

I wonder why it doesn’t work for you? You mentioned Anime, and I had it in mind to spend more time in 2016 watching Anime. Also want to read more Graphic novels. I need to expand my viewing reading habits. Charles, when you have the time to read, what do you usually read?
LikeLike
I might be trying too hard or focusing on the wrong part? Evangelion is a tough one because of the more depressing themes that turn up. That and it’s too easy to come close to blatantly copying it. I tend to read fantasy novels or indie books. The problem is that I’m a really slow reader, so I never hit the point where I get bored with a genre. So I don’t wander out very often.

Yeah, I understand that fear of copying something. I read super fast, but I am recupering from retina surgery, so the only reading I do write now is blog related. Thanks for letting me tap your brain. It is very helpful.

I love those two. They are also high on my list of favorites. I’ve seen Benjamin Button so many times, and I still get teary eyed. Do movies inspire you?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes they absolutely do! Those two … every time I watch them. Really powerful acting makes me want to run off and create something that could bring out the sort of emotions powerful scenes have had on me. Terms of Endearment did that to me the other night. Movies are very inspiring if you write.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yes, they are. Oh, Terms was one movie I was considering for my list. Love it. I think movies help me write more powerful scenes in my chapters. They teach you quite a bit about good and bad dialogue.

** SPOILER** Just in case someone hasn’t seen it. The last scene with Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine in the hospital. The last look they give each other…. You won’t believe this … I’ve just got teary writing this! That was one of the most powerful looks between two actors I think I’ve ever seen … (I need a tissue…)

Movies that make me want to write? Well, I’m not a writer but there are movies that make me WISH I could write….The Last Of The Mohicans…The Notebook…..Gone With The Wind….(Robert B. Parkers’ ) Jesse Stone. But, sigh….I’ll just have to settle for reading the sometimes haunting words of “the lonely author.”

Surprisingly, I’ve seen most of these. Strange because I rarely get to see movies, or at least ones I want to see. I have two evil monkeys that control the TV set and all movie choices.

It would be wise to include the WORST movie ever written, produced and directed to elicit wonderful smiles from your reader’s faces. The year, 1987. The Movie……drum roll…….ISHTAR. Admit it, you laughed when you saw the title (or at the very least, googled it to learn more!) 😀

Hahaha Yeah. that was one of Hollywood’s biggest duds. No, I remember the gradual build up and the devastating debut. I think it was Beatty and Hoffman. LOl What a bust.

*Such* a good list. I love #1! And I find that movies like Amelie and The Royal Tenenbaums really helped my writing students of yore understand how to develop character.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Very true about movies helping us develop character. When I learned to write screenplays it taught me to develop character through dialogue. Also, showed me how to write shorter, but more concise descriptions. Amelie was wonderful. Loved it. Oh, thanks for stopping by to contribute to this post. I appreciate it. Have a lovely day.

Thanks. There are so many Eurpoean movies about the Holocaust that amaze me. Europeans do these movies so much better than Hollywood.

I have an analogy 🙂 Good Hollywood movies are like a grand orchestra – splendid, magnificent. Good European movies are like a chamber orchestra – very intimate, talking straight to the soul.

Can’t pinpoint any one thing really. Sometimes it’s a good book, maybe a good article, something that’s a burning topic, and even movies. But basically it all depends on the kind of mood that I am in at a particular moment. If I’m searching for inspiration to write, something does get noticed. 🙂
