Let’s Pretend

On some nights nostalgia
drenches us with memories
like a warm summer rain
as we wear moments that
became lifelong accessories

Hey, do you still remember
when we played pretend
the hours seemed to pass
in micro seconds on days
we swore would never end

now recollections of our past
resemble old faded Polaroids
swinging swings we swung
overdosing on cotton candy
mischief we couldn’t avoid

wouldn’t it be wonderful
to live young and care free
relive magical afternoons
of our youth like the days
you pretended to love me

  1. I like the image of recollections resembling old, fading polaroids. Sorry to hear that you won’t be about much for a few days. I look forward to seeing you about again early next month.

      1. I just never did. Even in school, I always had a black eye or bruises or broken bones and I kept to myself because I was embarrassed.
I had trees who were my friends. I’d climb them and talk to them.
I don’t know. There’s just so much I missed out on.

              1. Mother beat the shit out of me….gave me away…sent me outside naked so everybody walking and driving by could see me.
You really should go back and glance at my blog from the beginning. Things might be a little clearer.

                1. Sorry, it is hard enough for me to keep up with my current posts to read. I had no idea about this. That is why you were so patient and willing to put up with Loser’s bullshit. I am so sorry to hear this. I understand you so much better now. Sigh. Even when I am far from home. no where near my blog, I wonder how you are doing. Be well my friend. You deserve better from the people in your life.

  3. This post is a bit sad. I hope everything is okay. Positive thoughts heading your way. 😀 side note: I was counting a bunch of 20’s the other night and the somewhat large number ended in 90 – we all know getting an odd number is impossible from an even anything. 😜 …hope that made you laugh! You can read that again when the bad part of the week happens. 😊 you are strong, you’ll get through it!

  4. I was going to say your presence will be missed, but I will change that to say your postings and comments will be missed. Your presence is always evident – and not just on the pages here. Anyone who has been touched by you knows your presence remains whether you are here to enact it or not.
That being said – your postings and comments WILL be missed. I hope for you a peace the permeates your being so no matter what chaos might swirl around you, your soul has the calm needed to walk through it all.
    Walk in peace.

    1. Thank you for the warm comments. You can’t imagine how they have touched me. After a long exhausting day to come home and read these comments. you put a much needed smile on my face. Thank you. I should be back sometime next week. Thank you. And may peace be with you.

  5. Beautiful…even that last line which, as usual, I wasn’t expecting. You always fool me! Smiles. I hope you are well my friend and that there will be more good than bad for you this week. I will look forward to your return.

  7. Andrew, I loved this pretend poem, the look back into childhood with such special moments shared. I remember playing pretend:My favorite was out in a tree, the tree being “the castle” ” let’s play grocery store”, play house” or “pretend we are at school and I am the teacher, you are the student. . . ”
I was off and on the grid this weekend, too! I had fun and walked a lot of miles with a good friend who is moving far away and into a relationship I am not too sure of, either. I also spent time with my daughter, walking and talking about life. In the end, I hope that we are still “cool” and you didn’t mind my being away and not commenting, Drew.
I hope you get rejuvenated and enjoy your events or time with wife? Not sure if I missed what was going on, but congratulations if it is a vacation or something special going on. Just be in the moment and we will be right here, waiting for your beautiful poetry or stories.

    1. I remember playing those games, too. It was a healthier and more imaginative childhood back in those days before iPads and video consoles. I understand the need to be off the grid. I have stopped blogging on weekends to catch my breath. Blogging consumes so much time, time that we need to devote to life, family, and our goals, SO believe me I understand. I wqill always be here to read your posts and admire your lovely photos. The week is to resolve so many complications. I will be okay, Perhaps a little exhausted when all is said and done. Thanks for the compliments. I will be peeking in from time to time this week, I will catch as many of your posts as I can. Thanks and be well.

  8. Andrew, I had so much fun reading this, remembering similar moments when I was young and all things seemed possible – soft summer rain, cotton candy (obviously the food of the gods, and they shared it with me,) and swings taking us so high I thought I’d launch over the sun.
Then that last line crunched my heart – “you pretended to love me.”

    1. Smiling. Regarding the last line- The Lonely Author giveth, the Lonely Author Taketh away. lol Yeah, the chilhood games and pretending were the best times of our lives, we just didn’t know it at the time. Sigh. Thank you.

  9. Lots of “tough stuff/Life” going around lately, poet pal. I’m recently returned–with a new blog/name–after a personal storm. And when you return, you may recognize me–though I’m intent on staying under the radar. I keep you and your loved ones in my daily/nightly prayers as usual. See you later 🙂

          1. Bless your heart–yes, blue skies today; so if yours are a bit cloudy, stay strong. It’s really special to discover there are “strangers out there” who don’t forget us–in fact, easily recognize us… Amazing 🙂

      1. That’s all you can do, take it one day at a time, and with one foot in front of the other. Knowing that whatever happens it will be as it should be. Take care my friend.
