How Things Are Meant To Be

How Things Are Meant To Be

Infertile Jennifer weeps
as she sits in a waiting
room. The frightened
lady beside her came to
abort her unborn child.

We cherish the lover we
can’t have. And we miss
the soul mate we never
appreciated. Our dreams
become our nightmares.

Reality hurts so much. We
lie to ourselves to ease our
pain. In the end we force
ourselves to accept that’s
how things are meant to be.

  1. This holds truth and yet, not so much hope. The fact we accept our fates, instead of questioning and trying to fix things is rather perplexing. You wrote an excellent poem presenting some of life’s quandaries in a vivid manner, Drew.

    1. Thank you for saying that. I do believe people tend to blame fate/life when things happen. Never realizing bad decision making played a role in unfortunate events in their lives. I prefer to to think we all have some control over our destiny. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts.

      1. I am relieved since I was afraid my expressing this would seem presumptuous. I was just trying to explain what I felt when I read this. Realizing we have some control over our fates is so important, Drew. We are in agreement 🙂 and your poem was to get others examining and thinking about this.

  2. Our destinies to a large extent lies in our hands and what we put into it is what we get out of it. What I tell people is that it’s never too late to be happy and start again except when one is dead. Old dreams may not be regained, but we can make new ones instead of living in regret. Beautiful, soul-searching poem.

    1. I agree with you 100%. I wrote this because I believe people like to blame fate and life too often. When our own decision making or lack of planning is what leads to many of the bad events in our life. Happy you appreciate this. Thank you and have a great day.
