The Experiment (100 Words)
Jackson walked through the lonely streets.
Wanting to learn more about his past, he volunteered for the dangerous experiment.
Scientists advised him of everything that could go wrong. They never suspected everything would go right.
Total recall, perfect memory; some said it couldn’t be accomplished.
Yet, long lost memories rushed through him like light through a prism.
Lost loves, toddler falls, even prenatal sensations.
He lived trapped in an eternal state of nostalgia.
They told him he would recall every memory.
No one warned him he would relive every pain.
Jackson finally understood some things are meant to be forgotten.

But he was made whole. He is no longer wondering about who he is. I guess remembering was worth it.

Yes and no. Many painful memories came back as well.
If you had the opportunity, would you want to remember everything? Honestly, I am too much of a coward.
Thanks for reading.

It depends on how much I want to know the past, how much I need answers. However, if I am already happy to begin with (with the present), I see no reason to rock the boat, so to speak. 🙂

Andrew, this is great and has a very dystopian feel to it. Marvelous story, so much achieved with only 100 words. Bravo. Have a wonderful week ahead. ~ Mia

Wonderful short story … so powerful. Memories aren’t selective unfortunately, no pleasure without pain.

Yes, have you seen “Black Mirror?” I guess there was one episode like this. You remember everything but no one said there will be no repercussions.

“Trapped in an eternal state of nostalgia.” Some things really are better off left alone. It seems he sacrificed his present in finding his past. What an awful state in which to be trapped. Oddly enough it’s almost like Alzheimer’s in a way as those affected by the disease can no longer recall things that happen only moments or days prior.

I like it a lot. “Jackson family understood some things are meant to be forgotten.” The experiment (100 words) can be: The experiment Jackson went through, or it could be author’s experiment to deliver something that thought provoking just in 100 words.
