The Old Man
The old man journeyed to the park
Where all of his friends convened
He conversed with every pigeon
Because no one else would listen.
The old man always traveled light
Nothing more than lint in his pockets
and a mind no longer carrying the burden
of melancholy memories long forgotten.
Beautiful. One of my first poems in my life was about an old man.

Very touching. It is very sweet to see them respond, when you wave a ‘hello’ at them. Sometimes, I feel elements of nature – birds, plants, flowers – communicate with the old people, more than us – the general people.

That is an interesting statement. Is it nature that communicates with old people or is it that older people take the time to communicate with nature. Either way, thank you for stopping by to read and leaving your profound thoughts here. Have a great day.

If you die young, you do so painfully, with your hopes and shortened memories throwing daggers in the heart. If you die old, even your memories are taken from you first and you die with only lint in pockets and mind. Thankfully, there’s the pigeons.

This resonated with me. That’s why I always make it a point to have a conversation with my mom even though it’s so hard having one with her sometimes. She’s in the first stage of Alzheimer’s.

Sorry, to hear about your mother. Enjoy her all you can. Like I always tell my wife and daughter, parents aren’t forever. I wish you and your mother all the best.
My wife admires how I go out of my way to have conversations with the elderly on the bus, train, and in the park. I admire them so much, they have so much wisdom and experience. We can learn so much from them.

And I admire you also for giving them time. Yes, they impart great knowledge. My father used to tell me stories about their simple life when he was young, their life during and after the war. His stories usually have lessons in them and I’m grateful for the wisdom he shared.

There has definitely been an erosion of the family unit. The elderly seem to become viewed as more of a burden than the treasure of of history and wealth of knowledge they once were.
