Inspiring Women of WordPress: beautifully broken you

I will try to revitalize my series of Inspiring Women of WordPress with a monthly post.

“There is no perfection, only beautiful versions of brokenness.” – Sharon L Adler, inspirational author of 300 Questions To Ask Your Parents Before It’s Too Late.

Life has an amazing way of touching us. During these months of illness and recovery, my precious friend Rachel of In Mind and Out, has reached out to me in my loneliest moments, lifting my spirits. We often joke about being “broken.” This wonderful poet and caring woman fails to see the beauty of her imperfections as her brokenness helped repair mine. Please, get to know Rachel, one of the Inspiring Women of WordPress.

beautifully broken you

fragments of a mirror
reflecting multiple moons in the night
making the parts
more beautiful than the whole
fractured sunsets
of healing warmth and light
in need of an ointment of poetry
to cure a jagged soul
shatterd moonlight and splintered sunsets
create a stunning view
reminding me of my darling kintsugi
beautifully broken you

Poetically translated to “golden joinery,” Kintsugi, or Kintsukuroi, is the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery. Rather than rejoin ceramic pieces with a camouflaged adhesive, the Kintsugi technique employs a special tree sap lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

  1. I think we have all had our moments of being beautifully broken and patched back together by kintsugi-like methods. I have many scars from life both wild and a few bad genes. I can relate to Rachel’s poem. It’s beautiful and touching.

    1. That is exactly how I think. The whole Japanese philosophy of kintsugi can be used on people as well. Our flaws and defects are what makes us different (unique). And that makes us interesting.

Grateful you enjoyed the poem. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I do appreciate the way you blog. Like me, you can kid around and have a good time, but I see you take this sewriously as well. Thank you for that.

Be safe my friend. I hope the pain of your loss can be alleviated with theb wonderful memories she gave you.

      1. We need humor. We need art. We need poetry. We need music. There is a lot of ugliness in the world, but thankfully there are people like you, Resa, Holly, Rachel, etc. who offer so much beauty, encouraging words, passion and hope to your readers, that you do a lot to make the world a better place for everyone. I try to do my part as best I can.

    1. Wendi, I am so touched by your words. They were almost poetic.
We are all broken in our own way. Learning to accept and appreciate
our brokenness is an important part of life. Self love is the only way to discover
      true love.
You almost have me tearing up. I do hope it is music for her soul. She is such a wonderful, caring person, she deserves that.

And you deserve so much for your thoughtful words. I am grateful for YOU.
We really do need more of you in this world, especially during these dark times.

Be well. Keep yourself safe from harm.

She is a wonderful soul like you say. Very caring, sweet, and gentle. We need more Rachel’s in this world.

As for your generous words on my poem. Grateful you liked it. Also, grateful you contributed your thoughts to this post honoring our mutual friend. It really means a lot to me. Thank you for being so thoughtful and gracious.

I had to read that twice and am conflicted as to how to react, whether graciously accept the lavish words, or make a ridiculously Chandler-ish joke because I can’t deal with the intense emotion. Lol. 5. Drew… one of the things I’ve admired about you the longest is your ability to make people feel special. It’s not the first time I’ve said this to you but it’s a quality of you that shines brightly. Your ‘inspiring women of WordPress series” has always inspired me, to view this forum as full of people who have so much to offer. I am so unbelievably touched that you would include me… for many reasons. I look up to and admire the other women you’ve included on here.

The poem. Drew, it is so beautiful. I love the sense that not only is kintsugi more beautiful in its broken and repaired form, but that perhaps that ‘golden joinery’ has a special healing capability of its own. The idea that one kintsugi can create another kintsugi (if that makes sense). The entire poem is gorgeous, the shattered and fractured pieces woven together with your words into such beautiful images – fractured sunsets that heal, reflective fragments showing many moons, and the stunning view that kintsugi creates. Poetic ointment, another form of that golden joinery. It’s full of hope, Drew. I do not have enough praise that’s adequate, nor thanks for writing this and dedicating it to me. I’m honoured. I’m especially honoured if in any way I’ve felt like kintsugi to you.

Thank you, a million times over ♥️

    1. Rachel,

From the beginning of this series, I had several ladies in mind. Women who have overcome adversity, doctors, motivational speakers, and poets who inspire me.
I always thought of you as a perfect fit for this. Now, that I got a chance to know you better, I was certain of it.

Kintsugi is very beautiful. And when you take this philosophy and apply it to people, well, you learn to appreciate people more. Who we are today, depends on the triumphs, tragedies, and tears we have sacrificed. The smiles and tears in your life made you who you are. A swseet, gentle soul. And as you can see, so many people think you are a wonderful, caring soul. You are very beautiful, even if you don’t realize it.

The poem. Of course, I tried to write entirely from the fractured perspective. You see the image I employed. The sunset looks magnificent. I believe I said the parts more beautiful than the whole. Kintsugi creating (mending) another kintsugi makes perfect sense to me. You dragged me out of my funk and set my head straight.

Thank you for your beautiful words. So grateful and relieved that the post came out like it did, and even happier you enjoyed it.
      You are kintsugi. Beautifully broken.

      1. I have just been scrolling through the comments on this post, the feeling of that is indescribable really. I am officially lost for words, which seems to happen when I most need them. Your poem and those comments are the ‘poetic ointment,’ you describe, a tonic and a balm for my soul. Reading the poem is like drinking an espresso, made to absolute perfection and bought to me on a rainy Sunday morning. You have touched my heart. You deserve all the love and healing that you get and I wish you everything you need and more over these coming days and weeks.

trying to care and inspire others.

          Thank you for being YOU.

And as for your kind wishes, I am tearing up……fingers crossed my precious friend. Fingers crossed.

    1. Kintsugi is a wonderful way of repairing pottery, but it has turned into a artwork, and possibly a wonderful philosophy. Embracing our flaws and defects. After all, it is what makes us different, unique. Thus, it should be the very thing that makes us interesting.

I have always adored this philosophy and I apply it to people.

Please, check out Rachel. She isn’t as active right now, but her poetry is beautiful and straight from her fabulous soul.

We are all broken, but it is those who have been broken and humbled by it who come out all the more stunning because of the beauty inside of them…like you and Rachel. 🙂 Sending warm, sweet, soft hugs to my gentle friend. xoxo

    1. Rachel is an amazing woman. Sweet, caring, and brave. She has overcome much and where others would have become bitter or selfish, her heart is still giving and giving. A really amazing lady.

Beautifully broken. I really like that term. It describes so many people. People like Rachel. And beautiful people like you.

I love what you said. People who have been broken and humbled come out more stunning.
I so agree with this statement.

Have I told you how beautiful you are? Inside and out? Forgive me if I haven’t . You really are, and I want you to know that.

Thank you for your warm and gentle support. My posts aren’t the same without your caring, humble thoughts.

Grateful for you Melissa. You are a treasure.
Please take good care of yourself. You are important to me.

    1. Very happy you enjoyed my little poem. Thank you for your beautiful words of appreciation. They make me so happy.
Rachel, is a wonderful, caring person. Worth meeting to get to know the poet and to be warmed by the heart of a
gentle soul. (Pssst a little secret. And don’t be surprised when you realize she doesn’t know how amazing she is).

      Please, be safe.

      1. Jeeees, Drew. I don’t know what to say. I really, really hope your doc can be helpful when you speak tomorrow. You can’t run out of meds, there has to be some way to get them. I hope your doc can give some reassurance as to the surgery being cancelled and it not being detrimental to you if it can wait a little longer. What a nightmare. I know it’s bad everywhere but there are some people in urgent need, like yourself, that’s not coronavirus-related. These people can’t just be forgotten. I’ll be thinking of you. Is there anything I can do? Short of trying to find a private jet (though I’m not averse to the idea of starting a petition or one of those ‘go fund me’ campaigns!) Stay safe, keep the stress levels down if at all possible. xx

        1. Caz, you are amazing. Hey, I am huddled here in the hut. Staying safe. I will venture out with the nurse to find my pills or their equivalent, but first I need to speak to my doc.

Maybe, I need to get stronger for the surgery, and this will give me more time to rest and build my strength. I am not worried. One day at a time.

Hope you are doing everything possible to stay safe. xoxo

Oh, and thank you. Please, don’t disappear.

You know when sometimes there’s a painful perfection in things….i felt that today reading your poem….i needed to read this today… I don’t even know who Rachel is but I have no doubt she is amazing from all the comments and how much light and beauty you have created in this poem dedicated to her. I definitely am very grateful I found your blog and will definitely be reading Rachel’s work as well. Thank you so much.
